2017/10/23

On 11 October 2017, Ambassador Gui Congyou attended the reception marking the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland and of the establishment of the Hong Kong SAR at the Swedish History Museum at the invitation of the organizer, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office London. Over 170 people were present, including Director-General of the Office Ms Priscilla To, Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce in Sweden Ms Torborg Chetkovich, representatives from the Swedish government and business community, foreign ambassadors and overseas Hong Kong people in Sweden.

Ambassador Gui delivered a speech at the reception, and said that under the guidance of Mr. Deng Xiaoping's great vision of "One Country, Two Systems", Hong Kong smoothly returned to the embrace of the motherland twenty years ago, which marked a major step toward the complete reunification of China. Hong Kong has since then embarked on a journey of unity and common development with the motherland. As President Xi Jinping has said, over the last two decades, the practice of "One Country, Two Systems" in Hong Kong, like the growth of a seedling, has become strong and robust despite wind and rain and yielded many fruits. The commitment of the Central Government of China to the policies of "One Country, Two Systems", "Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong" and a high degree of autonomy stays unchanged, and its resolve remains firm and strong. The reform and development of China's mainland will continue to bring endless opportunities to Hong Kong, and the Belt and Road Initiative and the building of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area will open up new space for Hong Kong to fully exploit its strengths. Looking ahead, we are full of confidence in the future of Hong Kong.

Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce in Sweden Ms Torborg Chetkovich said in her speech that the Chamber of Commerce aimed to continuously expand economic and trade exchanges and investment cooperation between Sweden and Hong Kong, and stood ready to continue working with friends from all walks of life to deepen the cooperation between Sweden and Hong Kong.

Director-General of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office London Ms Priscilla To said in her speech that thanks to the support of the mainland, Hong Kong had actively participated in the Belt and Road Initiative and made great progress in cooperation with countries across the world, including Sweden. In recent years, economic and trade relations between Hong Kong and Sweden have been deepening. The Karolinska Institute has established a research center in Hong Kong, and cooperation between Hong Kong and Sweden in education, science and technology, innovation and environmental protection has drawn attention from other parts of the world. With the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Hong Kong's unique role as China's window to the outside world will be more prominent. She hoped that Swedish friends would invest and start ventures in Hong Kong and enhance cooperation with Hong Kong in various fields. The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office London is responsible for Hong Kong's communication with the Nordic region and will remain dedicated to the cooperation between Swedish enterprises and Hong Kong.

Artists from a Hong Kong orchestra played "Jasmine", "Orchid Flower" and other Chinese folk songs at the reception, which were warmly welcomed by the guests.

On 12 October, Ambassador Gui met with Ms Priscilla To in the Chinese Embassy and they exchanged views on how to promote economic and trade cooperation between Hong Kong and Sweden and China-Sweden relations. Commercial Counselor Han Xiaodong also attended the meeting.
