China attaches great importance to wildlife protection. Pursuing a policy of strengthening the protection of wildlife resources, domesticating and breeding wildlife species, and properly developing and utilizing wildlife resources, China has made a lot of efforts both in legislation and in practice to protect the wildlife. As a result, the welfare of the wildlife in China has been steadily improved. Ⅰ.Legislation of wildlife/animals protection in China Since the 1980s, China has promulgated the following laws and regulations on wildlife protection in China: --Law of PRC on the Protection of Wildlife; --Law of PRC on the Entry and Exit Animal and Plant Quarantine; --Forest Law of PRC; --Regulations For the Implementation of the Law of PRC On the Protection of Terrestrial Wildlife; --Regulations For the Implementation of the Law of PRC On the Protection of Aquatic Wildlife; --Regulations on the Management of Domestication and Breeding License For Wildlife Under the State Protection, and --Circular of the State Council On Banning the Trade of Rhinoceros Horns and Tiger Bones. These laws and regulations form the legal basis of wildlife protection in China. Ⅱ.What China has done to protect wildlife/animals In recent years, the Chinese government has made tremendous efforts to protect wildlife in China. First, the Chinese government has spent heavily to set up 16 wildlife rescue centers and 310 wildlife rescue stations all over China to save and treat injured wildlife species before sending them back to their natural habitats. Second, the Chinese government has carried out a series of programs to enhance wildlife domestication, breeding, and utilization. Supervision is enhanced and illegal acts are punished. The underequipped breeding farms are closed. Third, the Chinese government has promoted the wildlife labeling system to set up archives for individual wildlife species to strengthen monitoring. The transportation of live wildlife needs to meet sanitary and safety standards to ensure that the wildlife being transported receives decent treatment. Fourth, improper performances by wild animals in circuses are forbidden. Fifth, strict standards are in place to ensure that the breeding and utilization of wildlife species for medical and economic purposes as well as their processing methods will both meet human needs for medical treatment and ensure the welfare of the animals. Sixth, the Chinese government has conducted extensive public campaigns to urge the public not to eat wild animals. Thanks to this initiative, the public awareness of wildlife protection in China has been greatly raised and China is becoming an animal friendly society. |
